We are planning to move from TFS to VSTS. How do we migrate our data and is there a variance on license count or cost from one to the other?
Migration from Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) to Team Foundation Server (TFS) has two aspects - data migration and license migration.
There is no automated way to migrate time records and time-related data from an existing TFS collection to a VSTS account. In the evaluation phase of the migration, it is important to identify a way that maintains work item ID's, so that migrating Timetracker data is possible in a reliable way. The main challenge is that if you migrate all collection data with the options Microsoft provides (see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/vsts/articles/migrate-to-vsts-from-tfs), the ID's of the work items might change. Time-related data is linked with these IDs, and if the IDs change, the connection between a time record and the work item is lost.
Therefore, to migrate Timetracker data, you need to first export time-related data from your original account and then import that data into the new account.
To export data, we recommended using the export feature available from the "Budgets" page (https://support.7pace.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000552903--Budgets-Page-Exporting-Tracked-Time-Details), or use the Reporting API (https://support.7pace.com/hc/en-us/sections/115001334706-Timetracker-API).
To import data, you can use the import feature available on the "Times Explorer" page (https://support.7pace.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000569206--Times-Explorer-Importing-Time-Records).
Migrating a license is not possible, as license application and types work differently (see https://support.7pace.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005445466-Can-you-explain-the-difference-between-buying-licenses-on-the-VS-Marketplace-vs-7pace-com-).
Timetracker for TFS licenses are sold on the 7pace store and are valid for unlimited TFS server installations, but cannot be applied to VSTS accounts (for Pro, Business and Premium plans).
